The Castellón coast is located on the east
side of Spain. Castellón is the capital of the province and lies 65km
north of Valencia, 414 km east of Madrid and 214 km south of Barcelona
Known as the Orange Blossom Coast, the Costa
Azahar runs from the borders of Catalonia and Castellon in the north to
Denia in the south although some say it stops at Valencia.
The Costa Azahar remains a popular
destination for holidays from the UK.
The Costa Azahar to the south of Valencia
has towns such as Oliva and Gandia with miles of sandy beaches, while
inland and to the north, hiking, horse riding and cycling are popular
in the Baix Maestrat region.
Valencia itself is te gateway to the
Mediterranean. The city has regenerated itself to become a modern,
cosmopolitan city, while the remains from remote periods, as far away as
138 B.C still have their place here.
Costa Azahar also offers other beautiful
towns such as Peñiscola with its great medieval castle or Oropesa, which
conserves the 16th century Tower of the King, erected as a defence against
pirates. A real gem is the Morella with its narrow lanes, enclosed by 14th
century walls.

Getting to the Costa Azahar
By road: The
Mediterranean motorway, A-7, connects with the European motorway network
and the N-340 runs parallel to the entire Castellón coast. The national
motorway A-3 is the main connection to the centre of the country, while
the N-234 and N-232 national roads connect with the Ebro valley and the
north of the country.
By rail: The Castellón coast has direct connections with the main Spanish
and European cities. Castellón, Burriana, Villareal, Benicassim, Oropesa,
Benicarló, Peníscola and Vinarós stations have daily services to and from
Valencia, Barcelona and Madrid.
By air: The closest airport to the Castellón coast is the Manises
international airport, in Valencia which is 65 km away. This airport
connects to the main Spanish and European cities.
Markets
There are numerous markets
held along the Costa Azahar. Most are well worth
visiting for fresh produce and souvenirs. The days they
are held vary according to the town. Check at the local
tourist information office.
