Villas and apartments for rent on the
Costa de la Luz, Spain

Holiday rentals on the Costa de la Luz,
Spain
(Select area)
Costa de la Luz
The Costa de la Luz is
probably one of the best-kept secrets in Spain. Located right
at the south west point of Spain, just to the east and south
of Portugal, the area includes the most southerly point of
mainland Europe, and remains virtually undeveloped in tourism.
The region is generally flat and largely covered with
scented pine trees inland, giving way at the coast to soft
golden sand. And most of the Costa De La Luz's few
resorts are basically pretty fishing villages that have
welcomed small numbers of visitors into their world.
The Costa de la Luz - known
as the Coast of Light - runs along the western part of the
Andalusía coastline that faces out to the Atlantic.
The temperatures are slightly milder and the often strong
Atlantic winds and waves make the Costa de la Luz a favourite
with wind surfers and surfboarders.
Generally on the beaches, the sand is finer and a more golden
colour than neighbouring Costa del Sol.
Beaches on the Costa de la Luz tend to be more expansive and
often bordered by sand dunes and pine trees. Hotel development
has been slower here than in other areas. This could be due to
the fact that about 30 percent of the area is protected by
nature reserves.
Ranges of cliffs and coves are generally to be found to the
east near Barbate and around the Campo de Gibraltar.
The Costa de la Luz is often divided into two sections -
Huelva Province which stretches from the Portuguese border to
the Donaña park and the River Guadalquivir - and Cadiz
Province which runs from the River Guadalquivir to Tarifa.
Huelva province boasts long, unspoiled andy beaches backed by
woods and sand dunes and many protected coastal reserves.
The beaches are not as windswept as the Cadiz section of the
coast and the coast shoreline is dotted with small fishing
ports and modern resorts which are separated by marshes and
river estuaries, making travelling around rather long winded.
In the summer months, these resorts are packed - great if you
enjoy a lively atmosphere. Outside of the summer months, the
pace slows down completely.
With comparatively less visitors than other coastlines in
Andalusía, Huelva's Costa de la Luz can still offer some empty
beaches where you can find a quiet pitch even in summer.
The Cadiz province of the Costa de La Luz has many interesting
and varied facets.
The Jerez section of the
'coast of light' reaches from charming Chipiona to Gibraltar,
offering everything from relaxing days playing golf and sherry
tasting in Jerez to water sports and flamboyant flamenco
dancing in Seville.

Holidays
on the Costa de la Luz, Spain
Sanlucar de Barrameda has golden sands
overlooking the River Guadalquivir and Donaña National Park. Going south,
around the small villages of Chipiona and Rota - often remembered by
Americans for the military base -there are more fine beaches.
South of the golf at Sancti Petri the
coastline is ragged and typified by coves and cliffs often backed by pine
forests. Try those to the north of the fishing town of Barbate. around
here, there are a number of small, trendy villages like Conil de la
Frontera, Caños de Meca, and Zahara de las Atunes.
Tarifa is the windsurfing capital of Europe and the best wind and kite
surfing beaches lie to the north at Playa Los Lances and Playa
Valdevaqueros.
Algeciras is industrialised but after that
at trendy Sotogrande there are some magnificent unspoiled stretches of
beach.
Isla Canela is a natural island surrounded
by miles of fine white sandy beaches, the beach resort of Isla Canela is a
large and popular tourist resort linked to Ayamonte town by a bridge. The
18-hole golf course has a putting green and practice course and is
surrounded by orange, pomegranate and palm trees.
The pretty fishing village, Punta Del Moral (point of the edge) is a short
distance away and its marina boasts activities like sailing, canoeing,
speedboat racing, tennis and underwater fishing.
Isla Cristina is heaving in the summer with
an influx of
|
tourists and is extremely popular with
Spanish visitors. Sandy and extensive beaches stretch nearly eight
kilometres and have excellent windsurfing and sailing spots. Islantilla is
a highly rated beach resort and has a sandy coast as far as the eyes can
see. This small, modern and purpose-built resort is well-known for its
27-hole golf course, and a wide golden sand beach.
Novo Sanci Petri is a developing resort,
ideal for a relaxing beach holiday or as a base for those wishing to
explore local towns and the Andalucian countryside. Golfing enthusiasts
are well catered for.
Chipiona is a traditional village resort
15km from Rota and 35km from Jerez. Popular and busy during high season
this resort will appeal to beach lovers.
Conil is positioned at the mouth of the
Salado River 14km south of Novo Sancti Petri and enjoys a pleasant coastal
setting amidst gentle hills, farmland and pine forests. Magnificent golden
sands run along this stretch of coast, mostly backed by sandstone cliffs.
Rota is an ideal choice for anyone seeking
traditional Andalucian culture, superb beaches, great food and a relaxed
atmosphere. Rota is not yet a major tourist centre. 25km from Jerez, the
town boasts the best and longest sands on this stretch of coast.
Head to Zahara de los Atunes to experience
the slower pace of life in a small, sleepy fishing village, whose rural
charm comes with the long sandy stretch of El Carmen beach and local
traditions.
Temperatures on the Costa de
la Luz
The weather on the Costa de la Luz can be
hot in the summer but when visiting the beach resorts the breeze
from the Atlantic coast makes it feel more comfortable . Even in the
winter the weather is usually mild, great for people keen on sports. Costa
de la Luz in Spain boasts an average of 300 days of sunshine a year.
Markets
There are numerous markets
held along the Costa Blanca. Most are well worth
visiting for fresh produce and souvenirs. The days they
are held vary according to the town. Check at the local
tourist information office.
