Lanzarote is the most easterly of the seven
larger islands in the Canary Islands (Isla Canarias) and boasts sandy
beaches lapped by the crystal clear Atlantic.
Lanzarote is an all year round holiday
destination. Situated just 70 miles off the coast of Africa the island is
37 miles (60km) long and 12 miles (20 km) wide, making it the fourth
largest island in the Canaries.
As with the other Canary Islands, Lanzarote
is volcanic in origin and has a lunar - like landscape due to the recent
eruptions during the 18th and 19th centuries.
Lanzarote, known as "Conejera" by the
islanders, is also known as the island with 100 volcanos. Lanzarote itself
includes the small islands of La Graciosa, Alegranza, Montaņa Clara, Roque
del Este y del Oeste.
The name Lanzarote comes from one of the
first explorers of the island, the Genovese sailor, Lancelotto Malocello.
The island's original name was Titeroygatra which means 'the coloured
hills" due to the red colour of the landscape.
Lanzarote has 99 beaches with a crystal
clear ocean and long stretches of sandy beaches, including several
beautiful white beaches such as at Playa Blanca and Papagayo.

Lanzarote enjoys a mild dry climate with
average daytime temperatures ranging from about 21C in January to 30C in
August. Annual rainfall is just 140mm or 5.5 inches.
