Tenerife, the most popular holiday
destination in the Canary Islands, offers lush forests, exotic fauna and
flora, deserts, mountains, volcanoes and a beautiful coastline with some
spectacular beaches.
It is no surprise that Tenerife is such a
popular holiday destination boasting as it does a range of activities from
scuba-diving and parasailing to top class golf courses, bars and
restaurants and great entertainment. There are theme parks and shows
galore.
Tenerife is the largest of the Canary
Islands and has an area of 2,057 sq km and a population of almost 750,000.
It is situated 200 miles off the west coast of North West Africa at about
28 degrees latitude and 16.5 degrees longitude
The south of Tenerife is totally different
to the north. The island’s mountainous northeast and northwest corners are
lush while the south is parched and arid. It is in the south where
holidaymakers flock to beaches, like Playa de Las Américas and Los
Cristianos. Green and lush, the north therefore gets occasional rain.
Mount Teide towers above everything on Tenerife and indeed Spain. The
volcanic scenery is amazing and has been used as the backdrop to scenes in
movies such as Star Wars, Planet of the Apes and the Ten Commandments.
